Hot and Bothered? Get to an Art Gallery.

Posted by on

It’s getting egregiously hot in the Los Angeles Area. No longer can you escape to the West Side piers or Central La streets to feel a gust of fresh air. It’s hot everywhere. From Studio City to Lakewood, the temperature is rising. There is one place, however, where you can, in fact, beat the heat- that place is an art gallery.

Purposefully temperature controlled, such spaces fill your eye and mind with stimulating things and cool down your nerves, who doesn’t love that? Art galleries are temperature controlled because of heat and humidity, specifically the temperature of the water vapor in the air, that cause work to deteriorate in dynamic ways. Most art is made of several materials, even an oil painting is done on a canvas made of wood and sheet, and the paint itself is sealed with various chemicals and natural elements. Everything reacts to temperature change. Anything from sculptures to fabric prints can contract and expand. While art is alive most certainly in a personal, creative sense; it’s very alive in a physical sense. It gets peeved when the weather gets too hot— just like you.

So, you realize that you for sure have to get over to a cool creative space, but which space will that be? Now you may be getting ahead of me here and assume I’m going to send you off to The Broad or MOCA, I totally could do that, but I won’t. The land is hot and full of art galleries- here are a few we think will work for our readers, and guess what— they’re free.

Taschen Gallery: Located at 8070 Beverly Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90048; The Beverly area is fabulous, to begin with, this gallery showcases the publishers best work— all electric and show stopping. Many exhibitions include your favorite musicians and pop culture icons.

Gallery 1988: Located at 7308 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90046; The current exhibitions deal with black velvet art and Mattel toys— a treat for the senses for sure. They also sell original works from several talented artists, dealing with themes of pop and gaming culture. You may find your next mantel piece right here.

Hauser Wirth & Schimmel: Located at 901 East 3rd Street, Los Angeles CA 90013; this place has it all quite literally. Want a family gardening class? Some world class Japanese abstract post modernism? A five-star restaurant ran by a world class North-Texan chef? It’s all there in the same fantastic building.

Known Gallery: Located at 441 North Fairfax Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90036; the gallery is heaven for anyone who loves LA’s street art. Artists include Saber, DabsMyla, along with exhibitions linked to social causes. It’s in the best area to view some side walk art as well.

Be sure to tag us when you stop by one of these incredibly cool joints- we’d love to be part of your adventure to more airy spaces.

With Love and AC,

Dec 9th.
